A romantic retreat in the heart of the Lake District

The Lake District is a place of history, serenity and sheer natural beauty. A place of ancient castles, rolling mountains and crystal waters. Near the shore of Lake Windermere - the largest natural lake in England - in the... More About Howbeck village of Windermere, stands The Howbeck Hotel, a warm and luxurious retreat, perfect for exploring this enchanting area. The hotel's elegant bedrooms are individually decorated and spacious, with co-ordinated soft furnishings and en suite bathrooms, many with Jaccuzi-style baths. Each suite is named after Cumbrian becks, a Viking word for a stream, underlining the area's connection to both nature and history. The hotel is renowned for its good hearty food, prepared to order from fresh and, wherever possible, local ingredients. Start the day with a hot Cumbrian platter breakfast, accompanied with fresh homemade bread. Dinner is served in the candlelit restaurant. Slow roast minted lamb and toffee sponge pudding are two of the house specialities. Windermere is a central location for touring the Lake District. There are lots of good walks right on the doorstep without the need to venture out in the car and stunning countryside just a short drive away. Over the Wrynose and Hardknott Pass a Roman fort awaits and the historic market towns of Kendal and Keswick are within easy reach, as is Ambleside, with its fine array of outdoor clothing shops.
