More About Abbeyglen Castle Hotel holidays, overlooks the sea and the Alpine-like village of Clifden, and is at the very heart of Connemara on the West coast of Ireland. The castle was built in 1832 by Sir John d'Arcy of Clifden Castle, but it fell into disuse in the days of the famine. The Hughes family purchased it in 1969 and have made extensive changes over the years, creating a tastefully decorated hotel with lush sweeping grounds. Abbeyglen and its bedrooms overlook acres of sheltered parkland and gardens, with small streams, pheasants and palm trees drawing the eye to Clifden below. The most recent renovation brought wooden floors and four poster beds to several of the rooms and from your window you can have views of a nearby babbling brook, the valley, Clifden, or even the tennis court and pitch & putt. At Clifden, Marconi had his radio station that transmitted the first transatlantic wireless messages, and Alcock and Brown landed their first transatlantic flight in 1919. With Connemara National Park and the Aran Islands close at hand, you too could be inspired to set off on your own exploration of undiscovered territory.
